Deliberate play & deflection - the theory

Time - a consideration that is important when a player misplays the ball. Sometimes a player:
  • has enough time to play the ball and is guilty for playing it poorly - deliberate play
  • has time only for an instinctive reaction and plays it poorly - deflection

Timeframe develops when analyzing many situations:
  • 0,3 seconds or less is a deflection
  • 0,6 seconds and more is a deliberate play (when the ball is expected)
  • 0,3-0,6 is a grey area where it depends upon the referee´s interpretation, the dynamics of the situation and the quality of play

Quality - a consideration that is misunderstood.

The guidelines say that the quality doesn´t matter when a player makes a deliberate play. But it is not emphasized that sometimes the guidelines might suggest a deflection, but as the ball is played with good quality then it cannot be a deflection.

Video nr 1

The ball moves towards the defender who finds it coming against him in an unexpected manner. He has to find his balance first, doesn´t have enough time (0,45 sec) and makes an instinctive attempt to play.

The biggest reason for OE is that it is unexpected - he is not expecting the ball to come against his feet.

SOLUTION:
rather a deflection - offside
