Offside Explained verdict:
When interpreting the Law, it clearly states:
- If an attacker runs towards the ball, but does not touch it and the ball leaves the field of play - then the referee must not raise the flag
This is an example of when referees should wait for the ball to be played or leave the field of play.
In this case, if the referee would have waited a bit more then the outcome would have been:
- offside - when the ball is touched
- corner kick - if the attacker decides not to play the ball
The attacker would not have had any possibility to argue with the decision as he did now.
